Jet Ski Rentals: Rules, Safety and Booking Tips
Updated October 31, 2026
BigSkipper may earn a commission when you book through some links. We do not test or inspect boats; these guides explain how renting works and what to compare.
'Jet Ski' is a Kawasaki brand name, but people use it for any personal watercraft (PWC). Renting one is fun, and rules are stricter than for many boats.
Rental styles
| Style | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Guided tour | Ride behind a guide on a set route | First-timers, unfamiliar areas |
| Free ride in a zone | Ride within a marked area | Short, simple outings |
| Hourly open rental | Ride on your own after a briefing | Experienced riders |
Rules vary by state
Many states set minimum ages to operate a PWC and require boater education for some or all operators. Rules differ by state and change, so check with the rental company and your state boating agency. NASBLA lists state boating authorities.
Before you ride
- Wear the life jacket and attach the engine cut-off lanyard.
- Keep distance from swimmers, docks and other boats.
- Ask about the damage deposit and what counts as damage.
Safety
Wear or carry a properly fitting U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for everyone aboard, check the weather before leaving, never boat under the influence, and tell someone your plan. See U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety for official guidance.
